Social Events

Throughout the school year, we host events as a club to promote camaraderie amongst our members. Below are some events that we have had in the past!

Women’s History Month Event

March 27, 2022

On Sunday, March 27, Prison Birth Project presented a women’s history month event highlighting the evolution of public health for women and gender minorities. PBP presented on “Women and Gender Minorities in the Carceral State: What PBP Advocates For.” Three additional student organizations joined as well. The Public Health Association, American Medical Women’s Association, and Lunar Doula Collective presented on various topics concerning the health of women and gender minorities. There was great turnout, and the event was a great way to wrap up women’s history month!

Documentary Viewing - The Sentence (2018)

February 13, 2022

The Sentence (2018) - Available on HBOMax

A few members met up at the School of Public Health to view the documentary “The Sentence” on February 13, 2022. Below is a description from the film’s website:

The Sentence explores the devastating consequences of mass incarceration and mandatory minimum drug sentencing through the story of Cindy Shank, a mother of three young children serving a 15-year sentence in federal prison for her tangential involvement in a Michigan drug ring years before. A lyrical, intimate story documented over 10 years by Cindy's younger brother, filmmaker Rudy Valdez, The Sentence follows Cindy’s struggles to be present in her children's lives from behind bars and her daughters' experiences growing up without their mother at home, while her husband, parents and siblings fight for her release before the last months of the Obama administration's Clemency Project.

Here are a few of our members that attended the viewing!
