Michigan Prison Doula Initiative

We proudly partner with the Michigan Prison Doula Initiative to ensure that every mother in prison is given a humane childbirth experience.

Many students at U of M don’t realize that Michigan’s only women’s prison, Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility, is less than eight miles from our Ann Arbor campus.

Roughly 40 prisoners held at this facility will give birth inside per year, and we need your help to ensure they are provided gender-responsive and trauma-informed care during this experience.

Starting in 2019, women inside won’t have to give birth alone.

That’s why it’s so important that we are fully integrated with our local community. Our institution prides itself in being the Leaders and Best, and to us, that means going beyond the average college student’s experience to make a difference-starting right here in our local community.

Help us reach our goal:

We want to ensure that every incarcerated mother has the right to a humane childbirth experience. Your contribution goes directly to mothers inside, see the cost breakdown below.
